Update on the Building Works at Palma de Mallorca Airport

The extensive building works at Palma de Mallorca Airport continue as part of the largest redevelopment project the airport has seen in the past 30 years. The renovations aim to enhance various aspects of the airport’s infrastructure.

Key areas undergoing improvements

Several sections of the airport are being upgraded, with significant changes taking place in Module A, which serves international flights from outside the EU. Extensive work is also being carried out in Module D, which is used for domestic and international flights in the Schengen area. As part of the modernisation, several new “fingers” are being constructed to create direct connections between aircraft and the terminal building, thereby facilitating smoother boarding and disembarking for passengers.

Enhancements already in use

Some of the newly refurbished areas have already opened to the public. One such improvement is the new security checkpoint on level 2, which is now operational and designed to enhance passenger flow through the airport. Additionally, the multi-storey car park has been expanded with the addition of a seventh floor. The redesigned parking facility aims to better accommodate passenger vehicles and rental cars, which are available for hire directly at the airport.

Retail expansion and future developments

Major renovations are currently being carried out on level 4 of the terminal building, where a new, expansive retail area is being developed. If construction stays on schedule, this new shopping area is expected to open by Easter of this year.

Despite the scale of the redevelopment, airport authorities have clarified that there are no plans to increase the airport’s overall capacity. Instead, the focus is on improving passenger convenience and enhancing the overall travel experience.

Challenges during construction

While the upgrades promise a more efficient airport in the long term, the ongoing construction has presented challenges for both airport staff and travellers. Noise and dust have been particular concerns for employees working on-site, as they are exposed to these disruptions for extended periods.

For passengers, the works have resulted in longer walking distances due to diversions around construction zones. These temporary inconveniences have led to some complaints, but the improvements are expected to offer long-term benefits once completed.

Project completion timeline

The entire refurbishment project is scheduled for completion in 2026. Until then, passengers and staff will have to navigate some disruptions, but the airport’s transformation is set to provide a more efficient and comfortable experience for all in the years to come.
