A Growing Goat Population: Why They’re Appearing Everywhere
In recent years, the population of wild mountain goats in Mallorca has surged. With no natural predators and mild winters, these animals have been able to reproduce freely. As a result, they are now venturing beyond their usual mountain habitats, becoming a common sight on hiking trails and, more alarmingly, on roads. In search of food, goats have even started wandering into residential areas and towns, bringing them into closer proximity with both locals and tourists.
Where You’re Most Likely to Encounter Goats on the Road
Certain roads have become hotspots for goat sightings, particularly the MA-10, which winds through the Serra de Tramuntana. Other winding routes near towns like Deià, Valldemossa, Fornalutx, and Sóller are also frequently visited by these animals. The serpentine road leading to Sa Calobra is another notorious spot for unexpected encounters. Recently, wild goats have even been spotted in Puntiró, not far from Palma City, where blind spots on the roads make them especially hazardous for drivers.
Measures to Improve Road Safety
To address the issue, Mallorcan authorities have introduced several measures aimed at improving road safety. Warning signs have been installed in high-risk areas, such as the Serra de Tramuntana and the road to Sa Calobra, reminding drivers to remain cautious. Additionally, there are controlled hunting and relocation programmes in place to help manage the growing population. In some of the most dangerous sections, fences have been erected along roadsides to prevent the animals from wandering onto the tarmac. However, these precautions are not implemented island-wide, and drivers should remain aware wherever they go.
