Palma Airport Disrupted Again by Severe Storms

Monday, September 23rd, 2024

On Monday, the 23rd of September 2024, Palma Airport is experiencing another round of significant weather-related disruptions due to heavy thunderstorms. From 11:30 a.m., no aircraft were able to land for around 20 minutes, forcing seven flights to be diverted to Menorca, Ibiza, and Barcelona airports. Although the worst of the storm has passed the area around the airport for the time being, the orange weather alert remains in effect for Mallorca until 5 p.m.

Air traffic has now resumed at Palma Airport, but delays for departing flights are widespread, lasting from a few minutes to several hours. So far, there have been few cancellations. Several incoming flights have been delayed due to rerouting around stormy areas.

This latest episode follows similar disruptions over the weekend when severe storms caused problems with airport operations on Saturday, the 21st of September. This summer has seen a notable increase in extreme weather in Mallorca, characterised by a mix of heatwaves and sudden storms, in line with global climate change trends that are making weather patterns more unpredictable.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on flight status.
