On Sunday, 8th September, Palma Airport is once again facing flight delays, although rainfall is less severe compared to previous days. According to the Spanish air traffic control authority, Enaire, the delays are primarily due to flight diversions implemented for safety reasons, as storm activity continues to disrupt air traffic across neighbouring regions, including mainland Spain and parts of Europe.
Eurocontrol, the European aviation safety organisation, highlighted on X (formerly Twitter) that storm clouds over eastern Spain and the Mediterranean are complicating airspace management. As a result, flight crews are having to deviate from standard routes, further challenging the coordination of air traffic. Airports in Barcelona and Palma are particularly affected, with significant delays anticipated. Weather-related disruptions are also expected to impact flights in France and the UK.
The National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for the Balearic Islands, effective from 8:00 to 15:00, due to the risk of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. While many flights are experiencing delays, no widespread cancellations have been reported.
Travellers are advised to check with their airline for the latest updates on their flight status.
