Global IT-Glitch: Palma Airport still Experiencing Delays

The IT glitch that caused global chaos on Friday morning has now been resolved, but its effects are still being felt at Palma Airport.
During the course of Friday, the IT systems were restored, with check-in systems functioning normally again. However, the disruption from Friday’s chaos has significantly impacted flight schedules, leaving many aircraft out of position. This continues to result in flight delays and some cancellations. The airport operator Aena issued the following press release on Friday evening:
“Airports and airlines from all over the world, as well as companies from all sectors, have been affected by the same incident and have collaborated to minimise the impact on passengers.
During the early hours of the morning, Aena’s contingency systems were activated and some processes were managed manually to maintain operations.
Aena’s Spanish airports in Spain have operated 5,600 flights up to 19:00 hours and there have been some 400 cancellations, 6.5% of operations.
The airports of the Aena network in Spain have been operational at all times.
Passengers should check with their airlines, which are still working to normalise operations.”
The IT issue, estimated to have impacted around 8.5 million Windows devices, caused widespread disruption on Friday morning. It affected numerous airports globally, as well as banks, hospitals, supermarkets, and other businesses.
The cause was identified as a faulty Windows software update. Although the issue was resolved by midday on Friday, its effects have been far-reaching.
It is hoped that air traffic will normalise over the course of Sunday. However, passengers are still advised to stay updated on their flight status.
