Palma de Mallorca Expands Its Wings: New Direct Flights to the US and China on the Horizon

In an interesting development for both travellers and the tourism industry, several new direct flight connections outside of Europe might be on the cards for Palma de Mallorca.
According to recent reports, American Airlines has announced plans to introduce a direct flight route between Miami and Palma de Mallorca. This would be the second direct air route connecting the United States and the beautiful island in the Mediterranean.
The inception of the first direct flight connection between Mallorca and the United States was initiated by United Airlines in June 2022. This pioneering route links New York to Palma de Mallorca and has since operated for two summer seasons. The route’s reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with United Airlines reporting an impressive 30% increase in reservations for the second season, effectively making it the airline’s most profitable Spanish route.
The success of this new route can be attributed to several factors. First and foremost, it signifies the island of Mallorca’s emergence as a highly desirable destination for American tourists. This, however, has not so much been driven by the island’s traditional appeal as a sun-and-beach destination, but rather by its beautiful scenery, picturesque villages, vibrant culture, and delectable gastronomy.
The economic benefits of this influx of North American tourism to Mallorca are substantial. It is estimated that American tourists spend an average of approximately 1,000 euros per day during their stay on the island.
The United Airlines flight connecting New York and Palma de Mallorca has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in increasing the visibility of the island on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and in attracting a burgeoning number of American visitors.
With the success of the New York route as an encouraging backdrop, American Airlines may now be seeking to capitalise on the momentum by launching a new direct flight route between Miami and Palma de Mallorca. While no concrete information on the potential new route has been released so far, American Airlines is expected to unveil further details over the coming weeks.
But there is more… At the recent Routes World 2023 travel fair in Istanbul, held from the 15th to the 17th of October, Mallorcan tourism officials initiated discussions with two prominent Chinese airlines, China Southern and China Eastern, aimed at establishing direct flight connections between China and Palma de Mallorca.
