From Monday, the 7th of June 2021, we will once more be able to admire the large cruise ships that are usually a common sight in Palma’s big port and which have been missing there for some considerable time. Due to the pandemic, cruise ships had not been allowed to dock in Palma since March last year.
The return of the ocean liners is due to falling infection rates, however, the ships will have to adhere to stringent infection control protocols.
The first to arrive on the 17th of June will be the German cruise ship “Mein Schiff 2”, which belongs to the tour operator Tui. With a length of 316 metres, a width of 36 metres, and a weight of 111,554 tons, it has a capacity for 2,894 passengers. Several others are scheduled to follow soon after.
In general, cruise ships are a somewhat contentious issue in Palma de Mallorca, as the sheer volume of visitors can lead to overcrowding in the city. This is especially problematic when several large ships dock at the same time, which is frequently the case during the summer months.
After the long break, however, the return of the cruise ships is welcomed and it is hoped that they will provide a much-needed boost to the local economy, which has suffered a severe blow during the course of the pandemic. And, together with the relaxation of some of the strict coronavirus rules in Mallorca, we may finally see a return to a semblance of normality, which we have all been craving for some time.
