After a Covid-related break of seven months, the Sóller train, or “Orange Express”, will finally be running again from Tuesday, the 1st of June 2021.
Preparations for the train’s return to service are in full swing. The carriages are being cleaned and disinfected to ensure passengers’ safety and comfort. On Thursday, the 27th of May, the train set off on a test run to ensure that there are no problems on the line between Palma and Sóller.
While the train tends to run regularly during the summer months in non-pandemic times, it will operate a limited timetable until further notice. Departures from Palma to Sóller are twice daily, at 10.30 am and at 6 pm. Departures from Sóller to Palma are at 9 am and 5 pm.
The vintage train dates back to 1912. It owes its nickname to the fact that it used to transport citrus fruit between Palma and the town of Sóller. The suspension of the train’s service since last November has been unprecedented in its 109-year long history.
The Orange Express is popular with tourists – a ride in one of the beautiful wooden carriages is an unforgettable experience. Passengers can sit back, relax and enjoy the hour-long journey while taking in the scenic route that leads along orange and lemon groves, through tunnels, and across mountains.
The train’s return to service also means the long-awaited return to work for many of the company’s employees, who had been furloughed over the last seven months and is therefore welcomed by locals and visitors alike.
