Only 20 hotels are currently open in the city of Palma de Mallorca due to the ongoing pandemic. In any normal year, more than 95% of the hotel offer was open at this time.
Average occupations do not reach 15% and it has become unfeasible for hotels to operate at this level. The operational offer is thus maintained by a business commitment, in the confidence that this can be overcome in the short or medium term. Each chain and company has its strategy, but profitability is negative.
The latest hotel closings have been the Castillo Hotel Son Vida, the Balanguera and Es Príncep. The hotel management of Palma affirms that the reopening of the closed establishments “will not take place until March and it remains to be seen that this will be the case since it will be necessary to see how the events regarding the pandemic and everything related to the anti-COVID tests in the issuing markets and at the Son Sant Joan airport”
Traffic at Palma airport is directly affected by regulations on flight schedules with the Peninsula and with European markets. Airlines have cut flights due to low demand. During this weekend of 7th of November 2020, from Friday to Sunday, 422 movements are scheduled at the airport, 90% less than last year.
